Labskaus by Volker, Version 2026
Now for the long-awaited announcement about Labskaus 2026.
Some of you may remember that we like to gather for a Labskaus feast every couple of years—and well, the time has come again.
Those who joined last time will recall that with around 18–20 people, we pretty much hit our limit. Without trying to relive the "old Berlin conditions," we're planning to expand things a little this year. So, we'll be moving the event to Freiburg on the Elbe. There's a community hall near the church where we'll have enough space to cook and celebrate with a larger crowd. Freiburg is located between Stade and Cuxhaven, right on the Elbe.
The planned date is October 16–18, 2026. It's a bit earlier than usual, which is due to a small "special operation" scheduled for Saturday afternoon—details to follow.
As always, please arrange your own accommodation. Freiburg/Elbe offers various hotels and holiday apartments. Just make sure you don't accidentally book in Freiburg im Breisgau—or on the opposite side of the Elbe, unless you fancy an unexpected overnight adventure, because getting back at night might be… challenging. A limited shuttle service will be available.
Please let us know by October 1st if you're coming, so I know how much Labskaus to prepare. (
Best regards from Stade,
Volker
Webmaster's note: Labskaus is a traditional sailor's dish from northern Germany, made from mashed potatoes, salted or corned beef, beetroot and onions, typically served with pickled gherkins, herring and a fried egg.
